Look into getting the latest Development release of Icarus verilog
simulator.
I think it is 11/17/01 version.
(Don't get the 0.5 release as the dev releases are way better.)
the web site is  www.icarus.com
There are no line number or gate number restrictions and I have developed
and
simulated a processor on it (SXP on Opencores).
(The source code is standard verilog and will simulate on any of the
commercial simulators.)
I think that the universities should begin to do everything on Icarus so
that
the program gets better and people are not constrained to size while
learning the language.
(A lot of schools use Silos which has a horribly small code limit with the
free version.)
