Ethernet - Cable modem

i connect to the internet via cable modem and i have been trying to
configure mulinux to connect. but i have failed :(. i tryed using the
DHCP autoconfig, but it just times out. i have a 3com 3c509b ethernet
card in my system. do i need to configure something else to tell it
(please forgive windows speek) my workgroup or computer description,
because they must be set for windows to connect? help... please!!!
