As readers of this list will recall, TEI P2 is being distributed for comment as a series of fascicles or part-issues, each containing a complete chapter of P2, as and when the texts were available. (File TEI ED J8, "Obtaining the Second Version of the TEI Guidelines," has the details, if you have forgotten). The present fascicle contains chapter 22 of P2, which discusses the TEI header. The TEI header serves as the bibliographic description of the machine-readable text. In addition, it provides a more detailed description of the encoded work ensuring that the electronic text, its source, its encoding, and its revisions are thoroughly documented. Some minor modifications of the expected overall contents of the Guidelines are also visible in this fascicle's overall table of contents for TEI P2; a more thorough revision of the expected contents will be posted shortly, as soon as we can agree on a few more details. Other fascicles will be announced as they become available. Thank you for your patience! Texts of P2 are being made available in a number of different electronic formats. These include plain screen-readable text (filetype DOC), LaTeX (filetype TEX), PostScript (filetype PS) and of course SGML (filetypes P2X and REF). To get electronic copies of this fascicle from the TEI-L fileserver, all you need do is send an ordinary email note to the address LISTSERV@UICVM (or listserv@uicvm.uic.edu) containing the line GET P222 xxx (where xxx is one of the filetypes mentioned above) The documents you request will be returned to you automatically as e-mail messages. Beware! some of the files are quite large, and so may be delayed. You will also receive an automatic notification that the file is on its way to you. (If you receive something illegible in a 'Listserv packed format', please contact one of the editors directly to see about getting you the file in a more useful form.) If the filetype you want is not available, contact us directly. The same files are available via anonymous FTP from the SGML Project at the University of Exeter. To access these files, your computer system must be on the InterNet. If it is, you should be able to give the command FTP sgml1.ex.ac.uk [ or FTP 144.173.6.61] When you are connected to the Exeter SGMLbox, type the following commands: cd tei\p2\drafts get p222.xxx (where xxx is the filetype as mentioned above; note however that the filename *must* be given in all lower-case letters) The files may also be obtained from the Markup-L Listserv fileserver in Germany, and from Professor Syun Tutiya in Japan. For more details on these and other sources of TEI information, please order copies of files EDJ8 MEMO (describes how to retrieve electronic copies of TEI P2 and the various formats in which they are available) EDJ9 MEMO (describes how to request paper copies of TEI P2, for those without electronic mail access) (on the Exeter file server, these may be edj8.doc and edj9.doc) -C. Sperberg-McQueen" Subject: Listserv data limit raised Those of you who have tried to get the postscript version of TEI documents (especially the spoken-text and TEI-header chapters) have sometimes experienced frustration with Listserv's enforcement of a daily data quota of 256 Kb. While the point of the rule (to avoid network overload) will always be apt, nevertheless I have been able to persuade our local network gurus that the figure of 256 Kb/day was a carryover from days of slower networks, and they have agreed to raise it to 2 Mb/day. So if you have tried to get P222 PS, only to be told you can't have so much data all at once, you should now try again. Be warned, however: the postscript version of P222 is about 550 Kb. -C. M. TEI Distribution: A couple of comments: I have been subscribed to this list for a long time now, and barring messages from people away on the vacation, have seen nothing of substance discussed about the TEI Guidelines. I was thinking about the reasons for this, and one possible reason that immediately comes to mind is that the tei distribution is quite a pain to use. For one thing anon-ftp has to wait till the guidelines reach the archives like the one maintained by Eric Naggum and secondly the distribution in facicles has done more to confuse that to clarify. Each time I find myself looking for some cryptic file name which says nothing about the contents that I can expect, something directly in violation of the principles of text encoding we are talking about. For instance, I now have no recollection about what the last facicle was numbered etc. I did read it thouroughly at the time. Perhaps some thought should be given to these facts so that the TEI guidlines get better used, as things stand I am afraid by the time all the facicles are announced and made available, people would have forgotten most of what was said in the initial parts. --Raman ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1992 20:02:32 CDT Reply-To: Lou Burnard Sender: "TEI-L: Text Encoding Initiative public discussion list" From: Lou Burnard Subject: irritated by Listserv Limits? You needn't be! Don't forget that you can also get the TEI drafts from the SGML Project's anonymous FTP server at the University of Exeter. FTP servers in general place no limits on the size of the file you can transfer -- they just die (or time out) in the middle. So maybe all i'm offering is a different way to be frustrated... Anyway, I'm glad to announce that all currently available drafts of P2 are now available by anonymous FTP. A brief aide-memoire follows: ftp sgml1.ex.ac.uk login: ftp password: your e-mail address cd /tei/p2/drafts mget p2*.ps [ gets the PostScript versions of everything bye Further details in the announcement just posted. in haste Lou Burnard p.s. LaTeX versions of P221 and P222 are in the pipeline; they'll be announced here as soon as they are done. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1992 22:59:02 CDT Reply-To: RWONNEBE@CMSA.gmr.com Sender: "TEI-L: Text Encoding Initiative public discussion list" From: RWONNEBE@CMSA.gmr.com Subject: TEI P222.doc dealing with names ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- *** Resending note of 08/31/92 03:19:50 Subject: TEI P222.doc dealing with names To: SMTP --GMRCMSA listserv Subject: TEI P222.doc dealing with names 1.
