Goldfarb, inventor of SGML and technical leader of the committee that developed it into an international standard, has ended a 27-year career with IBM to establish an independent consulting practice. His standards activities will continue on behalf of the SGML Users' Group, through sponsorship of his clients, including Fujitsu Network Transmission Systems and IBM Research. Goldfarb is the holder of the first International SGML Award of the Graphic Communications Association, and the Gutenberg Award of the Printing Industries of America. He is also the inventor of the HyTime language, which applies SGML to hypertext and multimedia, and is the author of "The SGML Handbook", the definitive reference on SGML. Charles F.
