Fiscal year 1994 sales for WorldView totaled $14 million, nearly four times that of its nearest competitor, clearly positioning Interleaf as the electronic document distribution market leader. Haviland Wright, Interleaf's chief scientist and senior vice president said: "Customer response for WorldView2 has been outstanding. We're confident that the product direction which we've taken will allow us to further leverage our position as the most widely-used technology for electronic document distribution and retrieval." The new release features advanced rendering and display technology to ensure document integrity and high-resolution display of completely formatted documents, as well as a dramatic increase in document processing speed. WorldView2 also adds powerful new programming libraries which allow users to extend the capabilities of the system to meet specific needs and easily integrate it into other application environments. Other enhancements include increased ease-of-use and a broader scope of file formats and hardware platforms supported. The WorldView system is geared to organizations where documents drive business-critical processes. It can assemble disparate types of electronic data and turn them into meaningful document collections that can quickly be searched and accessed. WorldView can manage with equal ease 20-page reports and thousands of pages of documentation that may be scattered throughout a company. With the WorldView system, long, complex documents complete with text, color photographs and drawings, multiple typefaces and various page styles may be viewed on a wide range of standard computers. End users are able to display, annotate, print and reuse the information contained in the documents, regardless of whether their computer is running the applications that created the original file. Beyond placing the printed page on the computer screen, WorldView provides end users with tools to search and navigate within the document collection to quickly retrieve the appropriate information. Electronic links or buttons connect related sections within the collection. Users can also access an "intuitive" search command and be provided with a list of the pages containing information on a specific topic. Today there are over one million WorldView users worldwide. Organizations such as Alcatel, Amtrak, The British Royal Navy, McDonnell Douglas, NASA, Northeast Utilities, the United Nations and Zeneca Pharmaceuticals are achieving substantial savings by replacing traditional paper-based document distribution with electronic document collections prepared with WorldView. WorldView2 is a true enterprise-wide application, available in MS Windows, Windows NT, UNIX, VMS, Macintosh and mainframe versions, with a total of 20 platforms supported -- more than any other viewer on the market. New in WorldView2 Enhancements and new functionality in WorldView2 include: * Display quality: New display technology, combined with color support for text and graphics and a significant number of new fonts, ensures a crisp, easy-to-read display of documents. * Performance: Multiple document collections are processed as much as 50% faster than before. WorldView2 also adds the ability to update existing collections incrementally. New files can be added, old files deleted and the collection will be rebuilt in a fraction of the time it takes to rebuild from scratch. * Command Language Interpreter (CLI): The CLI provides the mechanisms for extending WorldView functionality for specific requirements. For example, a CLI application can be written to provide an alternate full-text user interface or document open security facilities. * Application Programming Interface (API): The API gives organizations the ability to build their own interfaces for accessing online information. * Meta-collections: Instead of creating one giant collection, multiple smaller collections can be created which appear as a single collection to the user. Users are able to retrieve information and do full-text searches across multiple collections, while at the same time better manage system memory limitations and disk size. * Redesigned full-text interface: Users can search for information using simple, intuitive commands such as "Find me more like this" -- even across multiple collections. * SGML support: WorldView2 accepts input of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) files and can output the entire original SGML text file, making the information reusable. * Graphical browser: Users can visually navigate through the outline structure of any document collection (heads, subheads, etc.) prepared with the WorldView system, including SGML document structure. * PostScript filter improvements: WorldView2 adds support for Macintosh PostScript files and American A-E size and Metric A0-A5, B0-B5 PostScript files, further broadening the scope of file formats supported. * Restricted viewer: A security mechanism is available to lock a collection to a viewer, preventing unauthorized access. * Customizable toolbar: Users can add frequently-used commands directly to the Windows and Macintosh toolbars, improving productivity and ease-of-use. * International user interfaces: French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish interfaces have been added to meet the needs of diverse markets. WorldView Components Interleaf WorldView consists of two components. The WorldView Press takes documents from all major word processors, desktop publishing packages, CAD software, etc.; prepares them for online viewing; compresses them, and adds hyperlinks and a full-text index. This produces a set of documents ready to be viewed on virtually any type of computer -- laptops, PCs, Macintoshes, workstations and mainframes. Then WorldViewer allows end users to view a document, search for any combination of words, attach electronic notes, use the hyperlinks and full-text retrieval capabilities, zoom in, and print pages on any standard printer. WorldView displays only non-editable pages to ensure document integrity. Document collections can be distributed on a network or on various types of media, including CD-ROM, diskette and cartridge tape. Pricing and availability The unit price for WorldViewer2 is $195, with quantity pricing available. WorldView Press2 is priced at $9,995 for UNIX and $4,995 for MS Windows. WorldViewer2 is currently available for MS Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Sun SPARC and DEC OSF/1 AXP, OpenVMS AXP, OpenVMS VAX and ULTRIX platforms. Versions for Macintosh, HP700, IBM RS/6000, DEC NT AXP, OS/2, Data General AViiON, Silicon Graphics and IBM MVS and VM mainframes will be made available throughout the summer and fall of 1994. Under the agreement, Interleaf will integrate Berger-Levrault/Advanced Information Systems' SGML/Store database system with its Relational Document Manager (RDM) product as part of its enterprise-wide document management strategy. SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) is an international standard for the interchange of documents and the information in documents. It allows organizations to manage and reuse the data in documents independent of the publishing application that originally created the data. The integration of the SGML/Store technology will provide Interleaf RDM with a document component database, which allows end users to access and manage documents, or parts of documents, based on content and structure. SGML/Store will serve as a repository of SGML data which can be accessed, maintained and routed through an organization's workflow with RDM. RDM's open architecture will be further extended to become SGML-compliant, allowing users to store and retrieve SGML documents, components and Document Type Definitions (DTDs), facilitating information exchange and reuse. Francois Chahuneau, director for AIS, said: "We believe this technology partnership with Interleaf will allow customers to combine the benefits of SGML data management with an enterprise-wide document management solution. This will dramatically impact customers' adoption of SGML solutions, by providing a fast path for managing both SGML and non-SGML objects with one system." "Today's announcement strengthens Interleaf's strategic commitment to SGML and open systems," said Mark Ruport, Interleaf's president and CEO. "Interleaf's RDM architecture will be significantly enhanced through access to a new class of objects. This will give our users increased flexibility in managing objects of any size and at any level: from a single word to a complete collection of documents." Larry Bohn, Interleaf's senior vice president, marketing and business development, said, "We chose AIS because of their expertise and their commitment to the SGML open systems marketplace. After an extensive analysis, we found that they were the only proven provider offering a real-world solution for managing SGML data." Interleaf will begin delivering the SGML/Store technology immediately to its customer base and will integrate the SGML repository into its next major release of RDM which is planned for 1995. Berger-Levrault has been a part of the French publishing industry for over 300 years. AIS, based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France is its technology and integration arm. AIS has been a pioneer in developing SGML technology since the inception of the standard. SGML/Store was developed as part of a solution for an electronic library system design for AEROSPATIALE, the French partner in the international Airbus Consortium. Interleaf RDM lets organizations manage any document or data file (e.g., CAD, spreadsheets, word processing files) across multiple software, hardware and operating systems. RDM runs on personal computers, Macintoshes and UNIX workstations from SUN, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Digital under native GUIs including Microsoft Windows and Motif. RDM also supports industry standards such as SQL and SGML. Interleaf is a leading worldwide supplier of document management software and solutions. Interleaf's object-oriented, extensible technology enables organizations to gain competitive advantage by leveraging the information contained in documents and by automating the business-critical processes that rely on documents. ### ************************************************************** * SGML NEWSWIRE LIST MANAGER * * * * Linda Turner * * Corporate Communications * * Avalanche * * 947 Walnut Street * * Boulder, CO 80302 * * sgmlinfo@avalanche.com * * linda@avalanche.com * * Vox: (303) 449-5032 * * Fax: (303) 449-3246 * **************************************************************
