It was written by R. Steven Kiser, vice president of business development and general manager of the Publishing Products group of XSoft. "Our industry needs to take an entirely new perspective on technical publishing. A new generation of document publishing systems, with vastly expanded tools and capabilities, has become critical to increased productivity. For lack of a better term, I call this new generation the "real" electronic document. Unlike today's electronic document, the 'real' electronic document incorporates full information and document management capabilities into the publishing process.... One of the most important aspects of real electronic documents is their capacity for re-use of components of existing documents. New structured databases incorporating standards such as SGML will allow for the management of these components. These document database management systems will support more efficient creation of new documents, greater accuracy of information content, reduced inventories and production costs, and the production of documents with maximized relevance to the end user.... By fundamentally changing the structure and process of electronic technical publishing, as well as the work habits of users, the real electronic document will transform the enterprise organization over the next few years." Kiser goes on to describe exactly what kinds of publishing changes he predicts organizations will undergo. ************************************************************** * SGML NEWSWIRE LIST MANAGER * * * * Linda Turner * * Corporate Communications * * Avalanche * * 947 Walnut Street * * Boulder, CO 80302 * * linda@avalanche.com * * (303) 449-5032 * * (303) 449-3246 (fax) * **************************************************************
