Adobe plans to modify Acrobat's PDF (portable document format) so that the product supports document editing as well as video and audio, says CEO Warnock. Full-text search capabilities should be available by year's end, while support for structured documents -- including SGML (standardized general markup language) -- is to follow by June 1994." InformationWEEK "Adobe Acrobat Finally Debuts; Documented Dexterity" 21 June 1993 Anthony Vecchione and Ira Sager THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE AND SGML ================================== In addition to describing how CALS applications are being used in civilian agencies, a recent article in _Government Executive Magazine_ illustrates the role Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) plays in several military branches' CALS implementation project known as Joint CALS (JCALS), and the role systems integrator PRC plays in the Navy's and the Defense Logistics Agency's Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS) projects. The article had this to say about SGML in its relation to CALS: "Keeping the Navy's fleet in tip-top shape isn't an easy task. Many mechanical adjustments and repairs have to be done at sea, with the help of technical manuals and engineering drawings that add an extra 20 tons to the average cruiser. Finding pertinent repair information can take hours or even days, assuming it can be found at all.... The Air Force, Army and Marines face similar documentation problems. That's why the Defense Department is moving full steam ahead with a program for storing technical data in computers instead of on paper. It has developed a collection of data-interchange standards, known as CALS (Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support)... In order for technical data to be CALS-compliant, it must be translated into a common language... The common language used in the CALS program is SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language)... Software such as FastTag from Avalanche Development in Boulder, Colo., converts documents created in proprietary formats to SGML."
