The FreeDOS Beta 9 Service Release #1 Distribution is now available on ibiblio and Fdos.org.
This release is available as an ISO image and as a diskette distribution in 1.44MB format(s).
For your convenience we also provide a 1.44MB bootdisk image. (A full-featured distribution, like the Beta8 series, still lacks, though.)

Hereby I announce an updated version of the FreeDOS Beta9 Distribution. This release fixes several issues like damaging the bootloader of a previous operating system, and also updates several FreeDOS components. Features and important updated components of this release candidate:
This Service Release only contains the BASE diskset and the corresponding sources for it.
- Added a FreeDOS environment runnable from cdrom (previously known as ODIN bootdisk)
- Memtest86+ v1.40 has been updated on the bootdisk (option 1, then option 2)
- Smart Boot Manager v3.7.1r1 has been added to bootdisk (option 1, then option 3) so you can boot from cd/dvd on any 386 or newer system. It also eliminates potential buggy BIOS influences on the FreeDOS kernel.
- Installed FreeDOS configuration menu now so that the menu item with most available memory is the default choice.
- FreeDOS cdrom is now quite self-contained, and can be used without the special bootdisk.
(If you do want the special bootdisk, obtain the latest one!)
- FreeDOS Kernel 2035-UNSTABLE (Bootdisk only, by Arkady, Lucho, Jeremy and others) This is an experimental branch of the FreeDOS kernel, for testing purposes only.
- UDMA2 driver, the successor to the PCI IDE UDMA accelerator driver (UDMA2 by Jack R Ellis)
- EMM386 and HIMEM version 1.13, now including experimental VDS support.
- EDIT version 0.82, fixing several bugs
- 8086 compatible CDEX component for cdrom drive(r)s on ancient x86 computer systems
A more complete version is expected in the near future, when we start on Beta 10 or Pre-1.0 releases.
With over 10 years of working together on the FreeDOS project, this open source DOS is almost ready for a 1.0 release. Therefore we ask you to help us add items to the FreeDOS 1.0 ToDo list and to resolve the remaining issues.Beta9 Service Release #1 can be obtained from Ibiblio.

Other disksets have not been included due to lack of time and diskspace (and especially download time) The ISO file (cdrom image) can be recreated by running MAKEISO.BAT from the ISOLINUX directory, even directly from cdrom. If you want to add your own content, first copy FreeDOS cdrom contents to harddisk, then add your own files, and finally run MAKEISO.
If you only want a direct ISO made out of the cdrom, use the CD2ISO86 program which is located on the cdrom.
