That does sound bad. I've done a quick search for mentions of
incompatibility between versions of ext2 for different kernels, and not
come up with anything. I did see one piece of correspondence where it
was claimed that ext2 for 2.4 kernels was intended to be compatible with
earlier versions. Maybe you could post a test for people with access to
2.4 kernels to run, to see if it is a problem with your particular
debian, or more general.

No, probably not, but they ought to be worried by random fluctuations of
+-10k, or indeed +- anything from identical mkfs commands.

I think the most crucial thing is for it to be possible to maintain
mulinux on machines running mulinux. From what I read, it looks as if
the big distributions will soon be using ext3 or other new developments
anyway.
