I will set normally with
route add default gw <address> <interface>
Probabily, <interface> is redundant, because kernel can associate
address to interface.

My plan is to allow a home network of PCs using a mixed cabling serial/plip,
without ethernet. It is possible?

seems things are a more complex compared what we are telling.
