I've got the same problem, bootup and shutdown both take a long time.
Especially on a laptop. Being very lazy, I have not studied the
bootup/shutdown scripts much, but suspect it has something to do with the
config files being archived. My theory, (only a guess), is that mu is doing
something like...

Bootup:
1) Is feature X installed?
2) Decompress file X.gz to check.
3) Scan file X for info.
4) ...other bootup stuff...
5) Report to user whatever happens.
6) Repeat for features Y, Z, ... etc.

Shutdown:
1) Is feature X installed?
2) Decompress file X.gz to check.
3) Scan file X for info.
4) ...other shutdown stuff...
5) Report to user whatever happens.
6) Repeat for features Y, Z, ... etc.

If this is correct, the cure might be to never compress the file that tells
Bootup/Shutdown whether feature 'X' is installed, or at least only decompress
it once. Or maybe it's not correct, and there's something else would have to
be done...
