Hello Michele,

Thank you very much for your kind reply !

I've re-installed mulinux. But, I'm afraid, the problems with my
Thinkpad 340 CSE (12 MB ram, 344 MB ) are the same. :(

I try to describe what I did and the little additional information
I have.

I remembered a note from Tom Oehser. He said to install linux
(Tom's recue disk) with the line

     loadlin zimage=initrd.img floppy=thinkpad

and not the original line (= loadlin zimage=initrd.img),
because the kernel requires special thinkpad parameters.

So, I've installed mulinux with a modified boot.bat.
The new text was

------------- boot.bat --------------------
rem muLinux DOS installer
loadlin.exe mulinuz initrd=ROOT.gz vga=extended INFO=dosinstall
floppy=thinkpad

floppy=thinkpad

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
------------- eof boot.bat ----------------

Installation of mulinux 7r8 was ok, no problems.

Configuration:

swap = n
keyboard=de.map (850)
/user partition = y
and skip for replace or upgrade of the existing /usr partition.
/tmp = y, 4096 KB
all other parameters = n.

I made a '/# dmesg > log.txt' and 'cp log.txt /DOS/tmp/log.txt'.
The text is copied below:

-------------- log.txt = dmesg -----------
Memory: sized by int13 088h
Console: 16 point font, 400 scans
Console: colour VGA+ 80x25, 1 virtual console (max 63)

Memory: 10780k/12288k available (664k kernel code, 384k reserved, 460k data)
This processor honours the WP bit even when in supervisor mode. Good.

----------------- eof log.txt = dmesg --------

I inserted a MS-DOS 5.0 disk (with texts, programs) in drive A, said
mount ... (see below). µLinux tried to read the floppy (reading sound !)
and broke off.

The floppy was inserted _all_ the time.

Command, error message and prompt:

-------------------- command and error message --------------
/# mount /dev/fd0 /a

end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00, sector 64
floppy0: disk absent or changed during operation
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00, sector 66
/dev/fd0: I/O error
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00, sector 0
mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device
/#
----------------- eof of error message ---------------

I have some more information.
There are 2 partitions on my 344 MB harddrive, (1) primary DOS
(255 MB FAT 16 partition) and (2) an extended FAT 16 (89 MB)
partition.

fdisk broke off, but Partition Magic (version 3) said:

------------------ partition magic information: ------------

phys geometry 699 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors [ ***, see comment ]
with:

1. Primary FAT 16 partition

Partition type 06 (hex) FAT
1st phys sect 63 (cyl 0, head 1, sect 1)
last phys sect 522.143 (cyl 517, head 15, sect 63)
total phys sect 522.081 (254.9 MB)

2. Extended Partition FAT 16

1st phys sect 522.207 (cyl 518, head 1, sect 1)
last phys sect 704.591 (cyl 698, head 15, sect 63)
total phys sect 182.385 (89.1 MB)

----------------- end of partition magic information --------

I've marked 2 lines with [ *** ]. The first is in the mulinux file
from dmesg (see 'log.txt') which says

   hda: IBM-DBOA-2360, 344MB w/64kB Cache, CHS=700/16/63
                                               ^^^^
and the information from partition magic which says

phys geometry 699 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors
                 ^^^^
I'm afraid, there is a disagreement ?

Also, I cannot create swap space on hda. The error message is:

   UMSDOS: problem with EMD file. Can't read pos=7680 (0! = -5)

That's all I have.
I'm sorry I'm not much help :)

Alf
